I had a very interesting conversation today. This is how it went:
Lady: ...I really shouldn't say this.
Me: What?
Lady (married w/ 3 kids-one listening): Your husband is really hot.
Me: ...?
Lady: When he came to my door, I thought 'this man is in a totally different realm than the rest of us. What is he doing down here? He belongs somewhere higher up.'
Me: (laugh)
Lady: After I met him I called [mutual acquaintance-married w/ 4 children] and said, "I met Swen!" and she said, "HOT!"
Me: Yeah, he is. I think sometimes people wonder how the two of us ended up together.
Lady: No, you're adorable. [pause]
Me: (In my over sized yellow scout shirt, thrown on hurriedly over a 7 year old bulky red shirt. Hair pulled back in a braid 6 hours before. No make-up. Baggy khaki capris) Mmm-Hmm. [pause]
Lady: Did he grow up with money? I just thought when I saw him, "He must have grown up with rich parents. He just seems like he belongs in a different realm than the rest of us." (I do realize that's a repeat of a former comment. I'm just quoting here.)
Me: No. He grew up in a family with 8 kids on a principal's salary.
Lady: Wow...
And on it went.
Okay. I just want to say two things.
1. I consider Swen's hottie-ness as a definite bonus to his other wonderful qualities. I have often expressed to him that I am blessed to have him for many ways, and his gorgeousness is just a cherry on top. He maintains his 6-pack without exercising, while eating tremendously large servings of dessert. I am lucky to be able to enjoy a such a fine man. (I. To myself. Mine.)
2. It seems strange that other (married) women (with children!) are discussing how my husband is hot, then talking to me about it. Hmmm. Does this seem a little bit off to anyone else?

I, for one had never noticed. (Or if I had, I would keep it to myself.) :)
o swen you're so sexy!!! - da fire (Sarah made me put my name so there wouldn't be any confusion ;)
That's so funny. I honestly don't know what I'd have done..."mmm Thanks?" or just give a big old smile, two thumbs up and say "you Betcha!!"
By the way - you're a perfectly matched couple in my book! :)
Becca, you're so cute! Yeah, when I was younger...and now, whenever anyone (women) find out I'm his sister, they ""pause" and say about the same thing that you related to us. It is a funny thing considering that is the last thing on Swen's mind.
You're beautiful and I can't think of a better looking couple...except me and Ted...;)
I had a SIL say recently that she thought my Mister kept getting better and better looking with age- (first she said, "I hope this doesn't come out weird, but...".
I practically yelled, "I THINK SO TOO!!!!". I just agreed with her very strongly. :)
That would have been a bit odd. People should know better than to say things like that. Thinking it is one thing, but really...
(I have to say, that I think you are perfectly matched, and I am (nearly) insanely jealous of your hair. It's perfect.) :)
Well Bex,
I think it was probably healthy that she was open about it--no hidden agenda.
From the moment of his birth, he has been a cutie. However, I think it's how darn nice he is that shines through. And he is one lucky guy to have you!! (I should know)
I'd take it as a compliment to your good taste. :) And I agree that Swen is a super nice guy!
Yea, he's pretty easy on the eyes, and true, he does have a certain "chiseled Greek god sort of physique," but at least you never lost any girlfriends to him in high school. Although, from your blog post it sounds like you may lose some girlfriends because of him now... But that's the price we pay for the privilege of befriending the big man. :) All joking aside, I'm going to agree with his mom: Swen is about as real and sincere as they come.
Jimmy D.
Becca, whole thing is pretty darn funny. I love the whole yellow scout shirt part (only because I'm in scouts and know how ya feel in those wonderful yellow shirts). And yes I would agree that it is a little offish for a married woman to be discussing how hot she thinks your husband is with you his WIFE??!!
Ha! I absolutely loved this post, Becca. There is nothing better than authentic dialogue to show a scene.
Swen is definitely more handsome than the average feller. But like Allie said, it's the last thing on his mind. And we all know that it's not his most critical characteristic. It's his savior-like kindness that floors people, even if they don't have the ability to articulate this fact.
As far as the feelings of self-consciousness go, let's just say your kids are all incredibly adorable, and they got quite a bit of their beauty from you.
You're perfect for each other.
